(H/t to Fr. Steve Petrica for posting this on Facebook. I had forgotten the sermon fell on 14 July—a different kind of revolution than the more famous quatorze juillet revolution. Richard Church’s History of the Oxford Movement is a moving account of this important moment in Anglican history and ends in 1845, the year of Newman’s reception into the Catholic Church.)
“Sunday, July 14th, Mr. Keble preached the assize sermon in the University pulpit. It was published under the title of National Apostasy. I have ever considered and kept the day as the start of the religious movement of 1833.” [Bl. John Henry Cardinal Newman, Apologia Pro Vita Sua]
