I had the privilege of praying Evensong, this evening, 4 November 2018, with the bishop, dean, and people of Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral in Fargo, North Dakota. (A mere 2.5 hours from St. John’s. What are distances in the upper Midwest?) In addition to continuing the celebration of All Saints from Thursday, this service of Evensong commemorated the 25th anniversary of the consecration of the cathedral and was an occasion of thanksgiving for the Right Reverend Michael Aidan Smith, Obl.S.B.’s, years of service as the bishop of the diocese, which service will end with Bishop Michael’s retirement in May. The dean of the cathedral, the Very Reverend Mark Strobel, Obl.S.B., also in the photo, is an oblate of St. John’s Abbey as well.
By the way, I learned, tonight during the reception after Evensong, that the first cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota was a railroad car.
