Choral Evensong will be sung on the Feast of St. Bede the Venerable, 25 May 2019, 3 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Saint Louis Park. All are welcome to join us.
I mention this to the oblates and friends of the St. Benet Biscop Chapter because two oblates (Fr. William Brenna and Stephen Hilgendorf) and I have been members of the community of St. Bede the Venerable, which has been an Ordinariate presence in Minnesota.
St. Bede’s in its current form will be shuttered, as it were, after the service of choral Evensong. This is for reasons too complicated to discuss here. Much of what has led up to this moment has been aired in various fora on the internet, whether accurately or not. In any case, the service of Evensong will be bitter-sweet. But the music will be glorious: Stanford in C and Howells’s “Like as the Hart.”
The ideals of Anglicanorum coetibus will continue to be expressed in Minnesota through the Minnesota contingent (Fr. Brenna, Stephen Hilgendorf, and Bishop Michael Smith) of the St. Benet Biscop Chapter as well as by a group from St. Bede’s charged with doing a kind of re-set of the community in some form or other. “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” John 12:24.
Procedamus in pace Christi
